Promote your web store

January 10, 2009

#1 Search engine and directory submittal
Start with the major search engines and directories – Alta Vista, Yahoo, Infoseek, Lycos, Hotbot, Excite and Webcrawler – and then carefully select and submit to other search engines targeted towards your product or service. Beyond this you may wish to submit to the many other search engines available, or pay someone to do it for you.

#2 Online advertising via banners
Budget permitting, you should consider placing banner adverts on sites whose products are complimentary to your own. Banner placements can either be purchased directly from the owners of your selected sites, or you can have a Web advertising agency handle your requirements. As an alternative, you could use banner exchanges such as LinkExchange.

#3 Create a signature file
Create a signature file and add it to the bottom of every e-mail that you send. As well as your e-mail address and the URL of your Web store, an effective signature should include a hook, that is, something that will entice the reader to visit your store. Keep your signature brief: aim for no more than 6 lines, each a maximum of 65 characters wide.

#4 Print your URL everywhere
Make sure the URL of your Web store appears prominently on every piece of paper your business generates including adverts, letterheads, envelopes, flyers, shipping cartons and labels, invoices, compliment slips, brochures and catalogues. This is a great source of free publicity.

#5 Place keywords in right places
For search engines the page title is the most important part of the page. Make sure that you use your targeted keyword over there.

#6 Content is the king
According to research, the primary reason for people to be on the Internet is information. People want information, quality information, lots of it and in most of the cases for free! This is the reason why the search engine spiders are created to look for good, relevant textual contents. If you are looking for a top position on a specific search, your website must have quality relevant content.

Ebates gives you cash when you shop online.

November 30, 2008

Wow – its true, Ebates actually pays you to shop on the internet. There are relatively few gimmicks and they send a real check – no store coupons or paypal. What could be better?

WHAT IT IS

Many people don’t realize that internet retailers pay a kickback to sites that send shoppers to their site. So, for example, if you click through yahoo shopping or a coupon site to get to an internet store, that site will get some kickback, usually 2-5% of whatever you purchase. Ebates gives you a way to get some of that money back.

HOW IT WORKS

The first thing you have to do to even access the Ebates site is to sign up for the program by entering in all of your personal information. The sign up is relatively painless.

After you sign up, you can shop through the site. The site itself is pretty well organized and it is usually pretty easy to find out if a store you are interested in participates in ebates. Hundreds of stores participate in ebates so there is a good chance you will find what you are looking for.

There are two ways to save money on ebates. One way is to earn a rebate on your internet purchases. Rebates from most participating stores are in the 2-6% range. A few stores pay back even more. For example, some magazine sites may rebate as much as 25%.

To get to the store, you have to first go to the ebates site. Find the store name on ebates. Then, click on the store name. You will get a new window allowing you to shop at that store. If you make a purchase, your purchase will generate a rebate on ebates. The rebate is not instantaneous and can take a few days to much longer to appear in your account, depending on the store. Ebates will send you an email when your account is credited. You can also check the ebates site to see how much you have earned.

The thing to remember is that you have to click through the ebates site. If you leave the store site and come back later, they might not know you started through ebates. So, if you close the store window and come back at a later time, remember to open the ebates site first and click back through to the store again.

The other way ebates saves you money is to offer coupons. Some stores don’t have rebates but simply give you money off at the time of purchase. If a store listing on ebates has a little coupon tag next to the store name, click on the coupon to see what it offers. Happily, some stores offer both coupons and rebates so you can maximize your savings.

THE CATCH

There are a couple of catches you should know about when using the ebates site. The first catch is that you have to accumulate $5 in your account before you are eligible for a check. If you are getting only 2% of a rebate on your purchases, you would have to spend $250 to get anything back at all. If you never earn over $5, you don’t get anything.

The other catch is that you can only get a check quarterly so there can be a long wait between when you earn the rebate and the check actually arrives.

EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS

Like most internet shopping sites, ebates will send you out period emails identifying stores that are having sales. I found these emails to be too frequent, more than once a week, and they became annoying so I turned them off. I also noticed that they didn’t offer a ton of useful information. Generally, the sale ebates was advertising was easy to find just by going to your favorite site. The emails don’t really offer any inside track or information you couldn’t get elsewhere.

REFERRAL PROGRAM

Ebates offers a referral program. If you get a friend to sign up to use ebates and they actually use it, you can get a $5 referral fee. I have used the refer a friend program and have actually earned $20 in the last year from this part of the program.

FINAL RECOMMENDATION

I really like ebates and have used the site several times to save money. There is little effort and saving even a buck or two per purchase can add up – particularly for a diehard internet shopper like myself. I would recommend this site to anyone that spends over $200 per year internet shopping.

Tips for selling on eBay

November 30, 2008

Starting with online selling is not easy, here are some good tips lots of sellers used to become a powerseller and eventually setup their online business.

A picture IS worth 1000 words. It’s old-fashioned, but people still like to see things before they buy them. For successful eBay selling, make sure any products you list on eBay are accompanied by professional quality photographs. eBay charges extra pictures for service charge, a good way of doing that is to use some free picture hosting tool and link the pictures in your listing so that avoid extra cash paied to eBay.

Learn all about shipping. Shipping is under the control of the eBay seller, but some methods of shipping are better than others when you’re selling on eBay. You want to find the best method of shipping for your product in terms of expense and reliability and then specify that shipping method in your eBay listing. (And don’t forget to include the shipping cost in your shipping information for potential buyers.)

Do your eBay research. When selling on eBay, before you list a particular product, spend some time researching other similar products on eBay and following the bidding process. This will help you gauge the interest for your product and help you determine how much your product might be worth.

Pay as much attention to the writing of your eBay listing as to your picture. For selling on eBay, you need a powerful eBay listing. And the trick to writing a strong eBay listing is to combine search engine friendly phrasing with concrete details about the product in a way that will entice people to bid on your product. Take the time to craft your eBay listing just as you would any ad. your listing title is very important, this is how buyer search your listing according to the keyword in the title. try to use them all.

Offer a full slate of payment options, including credit cards. The more payment options you, as an Ebay seller, offer prospective bidders, the more bidders your product will attract and the more successful your selling on eBay will be.

Focus on getting positive feedback first. Feedback really matters when you’re selling on eBay. If you have a consistent record of positive feedback, prospective buyers will both bid more often and be willing to pay higher prices. So you may want to hold back on placing higher priced products until you have a successful track record as an eBay seller established.

Be business-like. Act professionally, provide the kind of superior customer service that will build your reputation, and make sure that you’re following all the business rules that apply, such as registering your business and properly charging and remitting taxes. Selling on eBay is just like any other business; to become an eBay success, you need to follow the rules and provide the kind of customer satisfaction that will translate into increased eBay sales.

Dont over price. people look on ebay for a bargain, we always find that with most items if you start the bidding at 99p more people will be interested and will start the bidding straight away.

Differentiate to attract more visitors. By specialising in a specific niche you can spend time learning what factors drive buyers to your sales. Experiment with different ways of listing similar items, or for example seeing if multiple photos create higher bids. You can even build a separate website outside of eBay to allow you to use powerful tools such as email newsletters to keep in touch with potential future buyers.

Use tools to turn volume into profit. You’ll never make a good profit on eBay doing everything manually. Well, you might, but you’ll be an extremely busy person. If you rely on volume sales in any way you will need to use automated tools to help you. eBay offers its own Turbo Lister tool to get items in bulk. But there are also plenty of third party tools you can buy at a pretty low cost or free (such auctiva), from those to see how much similar items have sold for in the past, to sales managers to track your performance. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different tools to find the most powerful ones for your business.
